Pope Condemns War, Rearmament as Societal Failure
During an address to Spain’s parliament in Madrid on Monday, the pontiff became the first pope to speak before the legislative body, according to reports.
A central theme of his speech was the protection of human life and the inherent dignity of every individual. Emphasizing the value of life at all stages, he said, "Every human life must be recognized and safeguarded from conception to its natural end, in every circumstance of its existence."
He further stressed that safeguarding life extends beyond religious or personal beliefs, stating, "The defense of human life is neither a matter of private interest nor confessional concern, but a goal of civilization."
According to reports, Pope Leo cautioned that societies weaken their moral foundations when they fail to defend their most vulnerable members.
Addressing migration, he referred to the issue as the "tragic drama of migration," saying it poses a challenge to "the conscience of nations and the ethical foundation of the international order."
He argued that the situation facing migrants and refugees demands "a response that places persons at the center, addresses the causes that force them to leave, and goes beyond the mere management of flows."
The pope's remarks underscored his broader appeal for policies rooted in human dignity, solidarity and long-term solutions to global crises.
